V.N. KARAZIN KHARKIV NATIONAL UNIVERSITY
FOUNDATION

The Karazin University or officially known as V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University was built in November 1804. It is the second oldest university in Ukraine after the University of Lviv. It is widely recognized and associated with not only the first Ukrainian newspapers and journals but also the first scientific societies.

Kharkiv University is quite unique in the sense that it is the only university in Ukraine that has trained and employed three Nobel Prize laureates:

The biologist: I. Mechnikov
The economist: S. Kuznets
The physicist: L. Landau.

LOCATION

The University is based in Kharkiv. It is also known as Kharkov and is the second-largest city with an excellent transport system. Presently, Kharkiv is a major cultural, scientific, educational, transport and industrial center of Ukraine, with quite a number of museums, theatres, and libraries.

RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC STAFF

Today Kharkiv National University has twenty-one world-famous scientific schools committed to intensive research, ranging from the School of Biology to the School of Physics and Energy, 5 Expert Examining Boards and 11 Senior Doctorate Expert Examining Board. The University employs up to fifteen hundred faculty and research staff, including more than 200 doctors of sciences, full-time professors, and nearly 800 PhDs and associate professors. The University is the leading research and development organization for many of the international space programs.
The University’s researchers publish 60 to 65 monographs yearly, has a collection of research papers with over 2,000 articles and abstracts, and usually hold 20 to 25 international conferences each year.

STUDENTS & GRADUATES

Since its foundation, the University has graduated over one hundred and thirty thousand (130,000) students.
Nearly sixty of the University graduates have become academicians and corresponding members of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences (UNAS).
The University is one of the largest research and development centers in Ukraine.
In the “Top-200 Ukraine” rating conducted by the UNESCO in 2016, Kharkiv University ranks 3rd among all the Ukrainian Higher Educational Institutions.

According to Scopus, the world’s largest abstract and citation database, the University holds 3rd position among the Ukrainian Research and Educational Institutions as per the quantity of articles published in the leading international scientific publications. FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY

The hostel system of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is quite good with fully furnished rooms, an apt studying environment and surrounded by recreational centers.

There are several accommodation choices for international students whether you prefer an independent lifestyle or enjoy living in a community.
Off-campus housing can be obtained in nearby apartments. Available apartments and houses vary in size, cost and number of conveniences.
All rooms in hostels are provided with internet facility and are equipped with a bed, mattress, pillow, blanket, desk, chair, Almira, heating, water system and suitable lighting for both studying and relaxation.

There are common areas where students can play and mingle. The hostels feature 24-hour access to security and emergency services, making it easy to get assistance when you need it. As a campus resident, you also have access to all support services such as campus Security Services, Counseling Services, and health Services.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Since 1974 V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University has been a full-time member of the International Association of Universities/UNESCO, a global association with over one hundred and fifty member states which cooperates with a joint network of international and national organizations
Since 2003 the University has been listed in the World Directory of medical schools of the World Health Organization (WHO) the International Medical Education Directory [IMED] and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research [FAIMER] (USA).
In January 2004 the University became a full individual member of the European University Association.

In March 2010 the University was added to the European Nuclear Education Network [ENEN] Association as an associated member.

Hostel

Hostels are provided with:
  • Free 24 hrs. gas, electricity, hot & cold water and phone.
  • Rooms are centrally heated.

  • Reading rooms and gym are also available in every hostel.

Student Life at university

The University is not only about studying, but also about a bright student life. Karazin University holds a lot of interesting events, both enjoyable and useful, direct participation in which is a good way to adapt to the student environment, make friends and show yourself.
Another bright event after the First-Year Student Week is the Alma Mater Contest. It not only helps students better know one another, but also reveal their musical, dancing, and other artistic talents.
The University holds four beauty pageants: Mr. University, Miss University, Miss Trade Union, Mr. Trade Union. Karazinites enjoy celebrating. That is why women may receive a theatrical performance as a present for March 8, or St. Valentine’s Day; those in love can test their feelings by participating in a staged marriage ceremony at the University: the newlyweds can borrow wedding clothing and rings, and receive symbolic marriage certificates. Student’s Day, Schools’ Days, and other holidays are accompanied by various events, contests, performances.
The Student Council is actively involved in students’ leisure organization.

Library

The Central Scientific Library was founded in 1804 on the initiative of the prominent educator, public figure and scholar Vasyl Karazin. The overall library holdings contain more than 3,350,000 items. Among them are more than 1.7 million items of scientific literature, 1.1 million textbooks.

Here is what Karazin University Library has to offer: five lending library subscriptions, twelve reading halls, a service of interlibrary subscriptions, two specialized rooms with catalogs, the Center for Internet Technologies, a hall of literature on the history of the University, a hall of local history books on Greece and Cyprus created with the assistance of A. Leventis (Cyprus), and the Window on America Information Center.

International students

V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University started training international students to study MBBS (General Medicine, MD) in 1948. Since then the School for International Students Training has graduated about 5,000 international students from Africa, Asia, and America and Europe. Presently there are more than 3000 international students, aspirants and doctorates from all over the world studying at the University.

University Campus

Accommodation is coordinated by the Center for International Education of the University. The Center directly draws up lists of the recommended for accommodation. The Student Quarters Council relies on these lists to prepare move-in permits, accommodation contracts and dormitory check-in assignments for the first-year students.

Foreign students are mostly accommodated in hall of residence No. 5. It is a five-floor building with a corridor system, a laundry room, a sports hall, and access to the Internet in every room.

The University also has an extensive network of spots to eat at with affordable and delicious food served: they vary from plain buffets working in all the University buildings and offering quick snacks to major cozy cafes where to enjoy a set meal in a pleasant atmosphere.
