Ternopil National Medical University (abbreviated to TNMU or TSMU for Ternopil State Medical University) is a medical university located in the city of Ternopil in Ukraine.

TSMU was established on the 12th of April 1957 as a Ternopil Medical Institute. In 1994, the Institute received an IV level of institutional accreditation. On 17th of November 2004, after reorganization, the institution became Ivan Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University.

In 2014 TNMU was ranked 1st in the industry ranking of all medical universities in Ukraine (held annually by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine).

LOCATION

Ternopil city is located in western Ukraine along the banks of the River Seret. The population of Ternopil is estimated to be 221,820. The city is known for its ancient architectural monuments in Ternopil. Among the most famous is the Old Castle, the Church of Natality, the Dominican Polish Roman Catholic Church and the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross.

Ternopil has a moderate continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. July is the warmest month of the year with the temperature averaging at 18.2 °C. The lowest average temperatures in the year occur in January when it is around -4.9 °C.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

The campus has residential and housing complex that includes premises of four dormitories, where more than 1.5 thousand students, both Ukrainian and international origin, live.

The campus also provides housing for the student’s family, interns, resident physicians, post-graduate students, students of the preparation department.

The campus has 2 playgrounds, a library, 3 gyms, catering, medical and household services.

RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC STAFF

The staff of the University includes over six hundred professors, among them are not only 102 Doctors of Science and full time professors but also four hundred and sixty associate professors.

The star alumni department contains 2 Corresponding and 1 Full Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, eleven Merited Scientists of Ukraine, three Merited Inventors of Ukraine, two Merited Teachers of Ukraine and four Merited Doctors of Ukraine.

STUDENTS/INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & GRADUATES

Over 15 thousand international students from about 60 countries have received education at Ternopil National Medical University. Currently over six thousand five hundred and thirty students are enrolled in Ternopil State Medical University, including more than one thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven international students from 53 countries.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

Ternopil State Medical University is listed in the FAIMER (International Medical Education directory) under ECFMG and the WHO directory of Medical Universities/Schools. TSMU’s degree is recognized by the WHO, US Education Department, General Medical Council of England, and in many other countries.

STUDENT LIFE AT TDMU

Leisure of the international students is well organized at the university. Despite of the high demands and complexity of the educational process and study materials, international students make their lives very interesting. They gladly play sports, organize football tournaments, cricket tournaments, compete in badminton, and the winners are awarded with trophy cups and other prizes. During the holidays and on the weekends international students travel with satisfaction around different picturesque corners of Ukraine. For example, at the end of the spring semester of the academic year 2014/2015, eight students of Ternopil State Medical University visited Vinnytsia and Uman. Teachers of the university travel with them and help them to communicate with local residents while translating during the tour. During this trip students liked Sophia Park the most. Our travelers were lucky with the weather – and they were able to fully enjoy the landscapes and monumental sights.

International students also actively organize amateur performances. For example, a charity festival called “Evening of International Cultural Exchange 2009” was organized by our students on March 28, 2009, in the largest concert hall of Ternopil – Palace of Culture “Berezil” “. This charity concert became a unique event of this kind held in Ternopil for the first time. It was initiated and carried out by international students of TSMU. Mayor of Ternopil, Ambassador of Malaysia to Ukraine, director of International Education Ministry of Education of Ukraine and other officials came to this concert. All funds collected during the preparation and conduct of the festival were transferred to the regional specialized orphanage “Little Baby”.

In April 2010 international students held a charity festival titled “International cultural exchange evening 2010 – Colors of the World”. It was a real celebration of emotions and colors, fireworks, songs and dances, customs and cultures of the world. Students from Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, Poland, Ukraine and other countries showed their performances to the audience. The festival was attended by representatives of the regional and city administration, Director of International Programs Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine, the first secretaries of foreign embassies and other officials.

Students from Lugansk State Medical University and the National Medical University named after O.O. Bogomolets also attended this festival. All funds collected during the preparation and conduct of this festival were transferred to Berezhany boarding school-orphanage.

LIBRARY AND RESEARCH

Gorbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University Library – educational, scientific, informational, cultural and educational unit of the university, which provides information support of the educational process and scientific work, assists in the training of highly qualified medical specialists. The library of the educational institution was created in July 1957 in accordance with the order of the rector of Ternopil Medical Institute of June 27, № 21. The first head of the library of the institute was PS Gerasimenko. Librarians DO Klimchuk and SI Wenger worked with him. During 1957-1959 the library of the medical institute was located in the biological building on the Theater Square, occupying 2 rooms of the first floor, and the reading room – in the audience # 3 of the physiological (administrative) building on the Square of the Will. At the end of 1959, the library book stock numbered 11,250 copies of documents, mainly educational literature. Most of them were transferred from the exchange funds of other libraries. In the following years, the book collection worked in the morphological building of the medical institute, having three staff of librarians in the staff: PS Gerasimenko, SI Wenger and DO Klimchuk. Customer service included a subscription and a reading room. The library stock numbered 12,400 copies. With the development of the educational institution, the material and technical base of the library improved from year to year, the book stock increased, the number of employees and users increased, new departments were created, the process of computerization and automation began. ADMISSIONS

After receiving the package of the above document you will get the detailed instructions. Please, follow these instructions and an official Invitation Letter for studying at TNMU will be sent to your correspondence address by courier express mail. The Invitation Letter should be submitted to the Embassy of Ukraine in your country for the purpose of receiving a student visa. After obtaining the student visa you must inform the International Students Office of TNMU about the exact date of your arrival to Ukraine and your flight number. Upon your arrival at Ternopil National Medical University you should submit the Application Pack to the International Students Office, and then you will be invited for an interview. Preparatory Course
Students who wish to receive training in Ukrainian or Russian language are enrolled to the Preparatory Department. A 10-month Preparatory program provides Ukrainian or Russian language courses, as well as chemistry, informatics, mathematics, physics and biology upgrading courses. The courses start on November 1. After successful completion of the preparatory program students are admitted to the Medical, Pharmaceutical or Dentistry Faculties, or they can go to any other university in Ukraine and apply for any medical or non medical specialty.
