Odessa National Medical University (ONMU) started as a medical faculty in the 1900s. The medical faculty soon became one of the most reputable medical faculties in the Russian Empire. Many renowned medical scientists, including the Nobel laureate and professor I. I. Mechnikov, has worked here.

Today, the University remains one of the leading medical universities in Ukraine. It is the largest and one of the oldest Medical University of Eastern and Western Europe. It is also a member of the International Association of Medical Universities. It is known for maintaining high standards of education throughout Europe and America. The University has been conferred with the highest level of accreditation by the Ukrainian government (level IV).

LOCATION

Odessa or Odesa is the largest city along the whole Black Sea, the fifth largest city in Ukraine and arguably the most important city of trade. It is the third most populous city of Ukraine (total population of approx. 1.1 million) and a major tourism center, located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea. Odessa is also often called the "Pearl of the Black Sea".

The city typically experiences dry, cold winters, which are relatively mild when compared to most of Ukraine as they're marked by temperatures that rarely fall below minus 10 °C while during summers, the temperatures often reach into the high 30°C.

  2. All rooms are centrally heated.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Odessa National Medical University has trained more than six hundred Professors, 1300 Doctors of Sciences and about eighty thousand doctors since its existence, among them there are more than 10,000 foreign nationals and about more than 600 International Doctors of sciences.

This is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), International Medical Education Directory (IMED), the Indian Medical Council, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, European Council of Medicine and General Medical Council of the UK.

It is also recognized by the SADC council and there is no to give any exams after the completion of your studies to start working in Southern African countries.

RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC STAFF

Odessa national medical university’s teaching staff consists of more than 1000 doctors, among them there are 106 Professors, 410 Associate Professors, 42 members of Foreign Academies, 39 honored workers of Science & Technology, 10 winners of State Prizes and other International awards. This is the highest recorded number of academicians working in the Medical University of Ukraine and the whole of Europe.

The University has 7 faculties, a medical college, and a Preparatory department for Foreign students. Fifty-eight theoretical departments and forty-five Clinical departments also work under ONMU.

It is a member of the International Association of Universities and the International Scientific Committee of UNESCO. The International Association of Universities, founded in 1950 on the initiative of UNESCO, unites about 600 institutions and organizations from 150 countries.

Sports-Health Complex
The university has good conditions not only for study but also for sports and recreation. There is a sport-health complex on the Black Sea shore, where over 500 students at a time can rest in summer.
The university’s Sports Complex is situated on the territory of the campus. It has six sports halls; for various games, including wrestling, table tennis, athletics, aerobics, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, training room (gym). At the university the students can participate in more than 16 kinds of sports. The most popular are athletics, basketball, handball, tennis, weight lifting, swimming, football, fencing, mini-football, judo, unarmed combat, chess, badminton and other.
The students who are interested in the creation art can attend the students’ centre “VITA”. The most popular are ballet dancing, modern and folk-dancing, Students Theater of popular miniatures, poetic studio and students press-club.

Polyclinic Service Annual medical examination of every student is mandatory, which is carried out every year in the beginning of academic session at the Students’ Polyclinic. The medical examination is done by the specialist doctors and if needed all type of diagnostic investigations are carried out. In the system of treatment, rehabilitation and medical check-up, an important role is played by the rehabilitation sector, which provides the following procedures: paraffin / ozokerite / mud-treatment, all kinds of electrical / light radiation treatment, laser therapy, magnetic therapy, electrically stimulated sleep, vacuum therapy, barotherapy, whirl bath, under-water vertical stretching of the spinal column, contrast massage, reflexotherapy, etc.

Museums of the university
ONMedU has three museums:
Historical Museum comprises the exhibits, which tell about the development of the University. At present there are 4.5 thousand exhibits which help students to study at the courses of the history of ONMedU.Anatomic Museum helps students to study basic human anatomy. It includes 3 thousand exhibits telling about the structure of Human body; these objects are prepared by the students and teaching staff of the University. The Museum of the Pathological Anatomy is one of the best professional museums in Ukraine. The museum has 2.5 thousand unique special materials showing the changes in the human organism that occur in different diseases.

Library
The library of ONMedU is one of the oldest and biggest libraries in Ukraine. The proud of the library is the fund of the medical-scientific periodical editions, which is one of the biggest in Ukraine. The funds of the library are exhibited at the exhibitions, symposia and scientific conferences of medical workers.
The library of ONMedU is a modern information centre that promotes educational, scientific and teaching process. Total fund of the library contains 1 million books. The library has its branches in each hostel. There is an Internet Hall in the building of library where students can receive latest international information. After enrolment every student receives “library card”, on the basis of which students can receive books for studies for the period of respective academic year. At the beginning of new academic year the students receives new books for that year.
Publishing and Printing Activity A powerful printing base, qualified staff, the use of the latest information technologies let the university publish different scientific, educational and methodological literature. 3 medical journals are published:
  1. Odessa Medical Journal – 6 times a year;
  2. Medical achievements and biology – 2 times a year;
  3. Integrative anthropology – 2 times a year.
The unique textbooks and practical aids on all studied disciplines are published at the University. “The library of medical student” is published in Russian, Ukrainian, English and French with a total circulation of 15,000 copies per year. The students of majority of medical establishments of Ukraine study these books

ADMISSIONS

Information on entering ONMedU
To receive an invitation a foreigner has to submit copies of the following documents to the educational institution in paper or electronic format to the e-mail of the international admission board (international@onmedu.edu.ua) :
  1. A passport document of the foreigner with a translation into the Ukrainian language;
  2. A document on the access qualification received with marks (points) for disciplines or an academic reference with translation into the Ukrainian language;
  3. written consent for the processing of personal data.
The admission commission operates from 1.08.2019 to 31.10.2019 inclusive. For obtaining a Master’s degree admission is carried out on the results of consideration of the documents submitted to the admissions commission and entrance exams in Biology, Chemistry and Language of studying. Entrance exams programs are published on the official website of the University.

Foreigners go to the Preparatory Department until 01.12.2019 to study the Ukrainian (Russian) language and to get prepared for an entrance exam in Biology and Chemistry.
For studying in Clinical Residency, PhD or doctoral studies – admission is based on the results of consideration of the submitted documents on the access qualification and entrance examinations in certain subjects and the language of studying. To enter the educational institution, the foreigner personally submits an application form in paper form to the admission commission.

To the application, foreign citizens add:
  1. A document (the original and a copy) of the previously acquired education (educational qualification) level, on the basis of which the enrollment is carried out;
  2. Supplement (the original and a copy) to the document of the previously acquired education (educational qualification) level, on the basis of which enrollment is carried out (if any);
  3. an academic certificate issued by a foreign / Ukrainian institution (in case of transfer or renewal for education, starting from the second year, an academic certificate is added)
  4. The original and a copy of the document, which contains information on the content of the curriculum of the previous level (stage) of higher education, credits obtained, duration of the training and the record of academic achievement in the academic disciplines in case of entrance the master’s degree or postgraduate course;
  5. A copy of the passport of a foreigner or a document certifying a stateless person;
  6. A health insurance policy, an insurance policy unless otherwise is provided by international treaties of Ukraine;
  7. Medical certificate of health status, certificate of absence of HIV infection;
  8. Photographs sized 30 x 40 mm;
  9. A copy of the certificate of a foreign Ukrainian (if any);
  10. Research proposal on the chosen scientific specialty or a list of published scientific works and published inventions in the Ukrainian or English languages certified by the established procedure at the place of work / training of the candidate are additionally provided on admission to the postgraduate study.
    To be admitted to the doctoral program, you will be additionally required to provide in Ukrainian or in English:
    • Thematic plan of dissertation work for obtaining a scientific degree of the doctor of sciences;
    • A copy of the diploma on the proper access qualification level.
    The documents specified in subparagraphs 1-5 of this paragraph must be translated into Ukrainian with the notarization of the translation.
    The documents specified in subparagraphs 1 to 4 of this paragraph have to be certified in the country of their issue in the manner that is officially applied in that country for such certification and legalized by the relevant foreign institution of Ukraine, unless otherwise provided by international agreements of Ukraine.
    Payment for educational services provided by ONMedU to foreigners is carried out according to an individual contract, which each foreigner concludes with the university personally.
    Documents on education of the enrolled foreigners issued by educational institutions of other countries are recognized in Ukraine in accordance with the legislation.
    According to the results of the recognition procedure, the educational institution makes a decision regarding the continuation of the foreigner’s studying if the level of their access qualification is recognized to be admissible, otherwise the foreigner will be dismissed.
    In case of non-authentication of the submitted document on the acquired educational level, the educational institution dismisses such a foreigner.
