Bukovinian State Medical University


Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) is one of the largest higher educational establishments in Chernivtsi. It was founded in the year 1944.

It is a modern-day multi-profile educational institution of the highest accreditation level (IV) and is associated member of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Magna Charta Universitatum (Bologna, Italy), the Association of the Carpathian Region Universities (ACRU) and the European University Association (EUA)
BSMU includes:

  • Six faculties (4 medical, stomatological, pharmacological);
  • educational-scientific institute of post-graduate education;
  • 49 departments;
  • Center of simulation medicine and innovative technologies;

The University is located in Chernivtsi. Chernivtsi is currently viewed as one of Western Ukraine's main cultural centers. The city is also considered as one of Ukraine's important educational and architectural sites. Historically a cosmopolitan community, Chernivtsi was once dubbed "Little Vienna and "Jerusalem upon the Prut".

In Chernivtsi, the summers are comfortable, the winters are very cold and dry, and it is partly cloudy year-around. The temperature typically varies between -5°C to 25°C and is rarely below -14°C or above 30°C.

The student’s campus consists of eight comfortable hostels connected to the Internet with great accommodations with reading rooms and gymnasium, everything necessary for making the place great for studying and unwinding.

BSMU also provides sports clubs with facilities for activities like volleyball, basketball, wrestling, table tennis, chess, athletics, mini-football are available for all the students.


Over the years of its 75 years of existence (1944-2019), the University has trained more than 30000 specialists in the following specialties: General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Pediatrics, Medical Psychology, Clinical Pharmacy.

Currently, 5,800 students, including more than 1800 international students are studying at the University. The number of foreign students from India, Somali, Nigeria, Ghana, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Sudan, the US, and other countries has been increasing from year to year.

Education is provided in both Ukrainian and English languages.

Bukovinian State Medical University’s teaching staff are proficient in pedagogical skills. Below is the summary of the University’s teaching strength:

  • One hundred and two Doctors of Science,
  • Four hundred and twenty-eight Candidates of Science,
  • Eighty-one Professors,
  • And Two hundred and forty-three Associate Professors.

The University’s staff includes 16 Honoured Doctors of Ukraine; Honoured Science Worker; Honoured Educationalist; 2 Laureates of the State Prize in the field of science and technology.
